The Might of Ondoy

It was a wednesday night when it started raining. I was still in school by nine pm, trapped and wet because I forgot to bring my umbrella with me. It was almost ten pm when I reached the train station. As soon as I got home I opened my computer to check some social networking sites and messages on my mail. I never really cared about the rain because it really is rainy season here in our country. Two days passed, it only rained during the night and I thought that's just natural. I never knew there was a storm because I rarely watch the news nowadays.

Friday night, I arrived home from school late. It was really raining hard and as usual I was really wet because I was really hard headed and forgot to bring an umbrella again. It was a cold night and it kept raining even before I got to bed. Then morning came, it was really cold and it's still raining hard. I got out of bed to make some coffee but then I was shocked in what lies in front of me. Our dogs were howling and their wet. I was standing in a pool of dirty water inside my house, the cable tv and phone lines were down. The streets were flooded and many vehicles and people were stranded. Luzon, one of the three great islands of the Philippines, was declared in a state of calamity because 26 areas were flooded including the metroes.

I was a bit glad that I can still connect on the internet the whole day yesterday but I was saddened when I saw the internet news. Almost 40 people were declared dead or was missing because the flood reach the heights of a standard two storey building. The search and rescue team could not attend to all the people who needed rescue. 400 people wer evacuated from their houses but there still many who were trapped above their roofs with no food and shelter to protect them in the cold rain.

Today, people are slowly recuperating but some of them are still trapped inside office buildings and above their roofs. My house is not flooded anymore and the cable tv and phone lines are now up. From time to time it still rains but not that hard as it was yesterday. The tropical storm was named Ondoy. Ondoy was just a tropical storm but it did cause Filipinos so much trouble than the previous storms before it.
